Never been asked that question?
Well, it’s something which pretty much remains in the shadow of our rap lives, but the truth is that the support of your family is very important for your development in rapping isn’t it?
Have you asked yourself though, what do they really think about that? How do they look at it?
Maybe they look at it as just another way you could express your feelings and develope your creativity. Something which would be constructive for your character?
On the other hand, they might look at you rapping as a time waster. They might think that you’re just messing around and rapping is just another excuse for you to not finish your homework! Or do they look at it as something which degrades you? Looking at all the other rap videos glorifying the fast life full of bitches and worshipping money, do they think that your morals are messed up?
What if you want to do it for real?
Even with everything I said, they don’t really think it’s something they can be concerned about. Time will pass, you will eventually find something more interesting, you will get more serious about life and you will just forget it. It’s just a period they say. Well, what if you tell them that you want to do this as a profession rather than a hobby? What if you tell them that you don’t want a nine to five, but you would rather enjoy making art more. How would they react?
This is the real test really. This is the time where they would show their trust, belief and support for you. Of course, at first they will think that it’s madness and they have the right. Think about it. You want to enter a market, which is very risky and the chance of you might not make it is big! From 10 000 people there is only one Jay-Z, you know that right? So, their first reaction is to be worried about your welfare. They want the best for you and that’s normal. Also, they might think that you will waste your potential. They know that you have the ability to reach a much higher level than just being a rapper and this is not the plan they had for you.
This is not what they’ve dreamt about. How did your parents react when you told them?
On the other hand, they might be the total opposite. They might really see that you possess the desire and the talent needed for this industry. Maybe they can see it in your eyes. Wouldn’t that be great? Have you watched any documentaries about Kanye West? In one of them, he revealed the relationship he had with his mother and how she stood by him in his persuit of his rap career. How she was giving him money for studio time, giving him ideas on songs and helping him with the marketing. He told us that without her, he wouldn’t have made it, and that’s real!
So what would your parents do, when you tell them you wanna be a rapper or you’ve told them already? What happened?
